Diamonds originate at extreme temperatures and pressures that exist only about 100 miles below the earth’s surface. Diamond’s carbon atoms are connected in all directions in essentially the same way. Graphite, another mineral that only includes carbon, has a totally distinct creation mechanism and crystal structure. Graphite is so soft that it can be written on, whereas diamond is so hard that it can only be scratched with another diamond.

Diamond is a special member of the mineral kingdom due to its distinctive chemical makeup and crystal structure. The only jewel produced entirely of a single element is the diamond, which is normally composed of 99.95 percent carbon. One or more trace elements, or atoms not necessary to the diamond’s basic chemistry, may be present in the remaining 0.05 percent. Its colour or crystal structure may be influenced by some trace elements.
